Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT), the fully automated operations of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Melbourne, Australia, has implemented four new hybrid automated container carriers (ACC) following successful commissioning and integration into operation over the past few weeks.
At the handover ceremony held on May 26, executives from Kalmar, including President and CEO Sami Niiranen, were present, along with VICT management and staff.
The new ACCs are part of VICT's expansion program aimed at increasing annual capacity to over 1.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), while supporting more efficient and sustainable terminal operations.
ACCs have been designed to enhance productivity by minimizing loading times. VICT and Kalmar have collaborated on several custom upgrades aimed at improving efficiency levels.
The hybrid ACCs have a lifting capacity of up to 60 tons. They are equipped with lithium-ion battery systems that provide energy recovery during operation, resulting in a 40% increase in energy efficiency and a reduction in carbon emissions by up to 50 tons per year.
Kalmar also emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation to support the evolving needs of modern container terminals. A pioneer in container and industrial materials, the company has supported VICT since the terminal's operations began in 2017.
VICT is the only fully automated container terminal in the Southern Hemisphere. The introduction of the new equipment marks another milestone in VICT's ongoing efforts to enhance productivity and meet the demands of global trade.
