Himalaya Shipping, backed by Thor Olav Trøym, has switched two of its newcastlemax bulk carriers from index charters to fixed charters at an average rate of $51,200 per day.
The five-month coverage will run from August 1 until the end of 2026 and is valued at approximately $15.7 million in total charter hire for the two vessels. Both vessels will continue to benefit from scrubbers under their existing charter agreements.
The vessels have not been named, however, the entire Himalaya fleet consists of 12 newcastlemax dual-fuel LNG vessels with a deadweight tonnage of 210,000 dwt.
The latest change was concluded at a significantly higher level than a similar move in August last year, when Himalaya fixed another two vessels at an average rate of $38,700 per day for the last quarter of 2025.
Additionally, Himalaya switched four vessels to fixed rates at an average cost of $56,500 per day in June. The company reported gross fleet charter earnings of $52,900 per day this month, including average scrubber benefits of $1,300 per vessel per day.
The recent deal involved the vessel Mount Aconcagua, built in 2024, for a period of 16 to 18 months at an index rate with a premium to the Baltic 5TC benchmark.
