According to DNV, in October 2025, 30 alternative fuel vessels were ordered — more than double the amount in September. This indicates an acceleration in the decarbonization of shipping and a growing demand from shipowners for eco-friendly solutions.
The majority of new orders are for vessels operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Of the 30 units ordered in October, 26 vessels are intended for the container segment and will use LNG as fuel. The remaining four vessels are tankers operating on methanol.
Growth of LNG Bunker Vessel Portfolio
Particular attention should be paid to the portfolio of LNG bunker vessels. In October, four more units were added to this category, bringing the total number of such orders to 38 vessels. Bunker vessels play a key role in the infrastructure of alternative fuels, supplying the fleet with eco-friendly fuel in ports and at anchorages.
Trends in Shipbuilding
The dominance of LNG in the order portfolio indicates a continuation of trends that emerged in the second half of 2024. The prevalence of container ships in new orders reflects the increasing pressure from cargo owners and consignees demanding more eco-friendly logistics options.
According to global data from DNV, there are currently over 2,000 vessels operating on alternative fuels. This demonstrates that the transition to eco-friendly shipping is becoming not just a trend, but a standard practice in shipbuilding and shipping.
