On October 1, the Israeli Navy began an operation to intercept the large Global Sumud flotilla, which was attempting to break the maritime blockade of the Gaza Strip. The fleet consisted of more than twenty vessels carrying symbolic humanitarian aid intended for Palestinians.
The main goal of the flotilla was to draw the international community's attention to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, which is under Israeli blockade.
The operation of the Israeli Navy was accompanied by the seizure of several boats and vessels from the flotilla. One of the lead vessels, the boat "Alma," was taken by Israeli soldiers with a boarding team. The ship "Syros" was also seized, with activists on board arrested during the attempt to break through. Other flotilla participants, particularly on the vessel "Adara," threw their mobile phones overboard as Israeli forces approached.
In an official video message from Global Sumud, crews of the vessels can be seen putting on life jackets and awaiting actions from Israeli soldiers.
The interception of the flotilla occurred in accordance with Israel-supported measures to blockade Gaza, aimed at preventing the delivery of weapons and illegal cargo, despite the declared humanitarian focus of the mission.
