Seaspan, the world's largest independent owner of containerships, is relocating its headquarters from Hong Kong to Singapore effective October 1, 2025. At the same time, it plans to change the flag registration of around 100 vessels from its total fleet, which includes 186 containerships with a total capacity of over 650,000 TEU.
This decision is aimed at removing the vessels from the scope of new port fees introduced in the USA, which will significantly reduce the company's operating costs and enhance its competitiveness.
The re-registration and relocation are part of Seaspan's comprehensive strategy to adapt to changing market conditions and tax regulations, as well as to strengthen the company's position in the international shipping arena.
Additionally, according to infrastructure news, the company is actively pursuing innovative projects. For example, at Seaspan Shipyards in Canada, the construction of multi-purpose icebreakers for the country's Coast Guard is ongoing, including unique Polar capable vessels that can operate in extreme Arctic conditions for extended periods.
Seaspan is also implementing environmental initiatives and expanding the supply of renewable liquefied natural gas (R-LNG) for shipowners, which complies with the International Maritime Organization's requirements and EU regulations on decarbonizing maritime transport.
One of the latest major technological partnerships has been with Anew Climate on the West Coast of North America, aimed at supplying ISCC-certified renewable LNG, which reduces the environmental footprint of shipping.
Thus, Seaspan is not only optimizing its operational and legal structures but also actively investing in environmental and technological innovations, reinforcing its leading position in global shipping and shipbuilding.
