Sempra Infrastructure has commenced production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the ECA LNG Phase 1 project in Ensenada, Mexico, which is being developed in partnership with TotalEnergies.
The production of LNG was achieved as part of the commissioning process ahead of the start of commercial operations.
This milestone marks the beginning of LNG production at the export terminal and brings the project closer to full operations, which are expected in the coming months.
Located on the Pacific coast of Mexico, the ECA LNG terminal is designed to supply natural gas from the U.S. to Asia and other Pacific markets through shorter maritime routes compared to export terminals on the Mexican coast.
ECA LNG Phase 1 consists of a single liquefaction facility with a nameplate capacity of 3.25 million tons of LNG per year.
The project is supported by long-term sales and purchase agreements with TotalEnergies and Mitsui & Co.
Sempra Infrastructure expects the project to reach substantial completion by summer 2026, with commercial operations and deliveries under long-term agreements starting shortly thereafter.
The second phase of LNG development is also progressing at the site in Ensenada.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of the entire ECA LNG Phase 1 team and their unwavering commitment to the highest standards of successful project development. The production of the first LNG marks a significant milestone on the path to full operations, which are expected in the coming months, providing reliable and safe energy from the Pacific coast of North America to global markets,” said Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure.
