The US plans to introduce a fee for all foreign vessels entering its ports
The White House has released the "American Maritime Action Plan," which includes the introduction of a universal fee for infrastructure and security for all foreign-built commercial vessels entering American ports.
The fee will be based on the weight of the imported cargo. At a rate of 1 cent per kilogram, the fee could generate about $66 billion over 10 years, and at 25 cents per kilogram, it could bring in about $1.5 trillion.
The funds raised will go to a new Central Maritime Security Fund and will be used to revitalize the potential US shipbuilding industry and expand the American-built fleet.
Goals of the initiative
Will affect shipowners and operators from all countries entering American ports.
Support for the national shipbuilding industry.
Increase in federal budget revenues.
The measure aims to strengthen US maritime infrastructure and stimulate domestic ship production.
