The volume of bunkering in the port of Rotterdam in 2025 amounted to 9.82 million tons, which is identical to the figure for 2024. This stable indicator reflects the resilience of the marine fuel market in one of Europe's largest bunkering hubs, used for voyage planning and cost calculation.
Bunkering Structure: HSFO Leadership and LNG Growth
The leader in sales volumes was heavy fuel oil HSFO — 3.42 million tons, with demand increasing by 2.7% compared to the previous year. VLSFO showed a decrease of 7.3% to 2.85 million tons. Significant growth was demonstrated by MGO (+21.97% to 1.25 million tons) and ULSFO (+15.58% to 864.78 thousand tons), while MDO decreased by 25.97% to 337.28 thousand tons.
Decline in Biofuels and Breakthrough in LNG
The volume of biofuels decreased by 14.23% — to 649.46 thousand tons from 757.3 thousand tons in 2024. At the same time, the bunkering of liquefied natural gas (LNG), including bio-LNG, exceeded 1 million cubic meters for the first time: demand for conventional LNG increased by 5.47% to 992.91 cubic meters.
- HSFO: 3.42 million tons (+2.7%)
- VLSFO: 2.85 million tons (-7.3%)
- MGO: 1.25 million tons (+21.97%)
- ULSFO: 864.78 thousand tons (+15.58%)
- MDO: 337.28 thousand tons (-25.97%)
- Biofuels: 649.46 thousand tons (-14.23%)
- LNG: over 1 million cubic meters (+5.47%)
The stable volume of bunkering against the backdrop of an overall decline in the port's cargo turnover (435.8 million tons in 2024, -0.7%) underscores Rotterdam's key role as a reliable center for marine fuel for European and transatlantic shipping.
