The first semi-automated container terminal opened in Sokhna port, Egypt
The first semi-automated container terminal Red Sea Container Terminals has started operations at Sokhna port on the shores of the Suez Gulf. The project was built through the joint efforts of Hutchison Ports, CMA Terminals, and Cosco Shipping Ports.
The terminal is designed to significantly increase the port's capacity, strengthening Egypt's position as a key hub in international trade through the Suez Canal. The first container ship to arrive at the new terminal was the CMA CGM Iron, marking a successful launch of the infrastructure.
The opening of the terminal comes amid a rise in global container traffic. According to project participants, semi-automated systems will accelerate vessel processing and enhance logistics efficiency, minimizing downtime and human factors.
Key features of the terminal
- Semi-automation: Use of modern cranes and management systems to optimize loading/unloading.
- Capacity: Capable of handling large container ships, including Iron class vessels.
- Investors: Hutchison Ports (experts in port infrastructure), CMA Terminals, and Cosco Shipping Ports (leaders in maritime transport).
Sokhna port, located on the Red Sea, plays a strategic role in the transit of goods from Asia to Europe. The new terminal will strengthen the region's competitive advantages, contributing to Egypt's economic growth.
