The naval forces of five NATO countries have launched an 11-day anti-submarine exercise Arctic Dolphin 26 off the west coast of Norway. The exercises aim to practice operations for detecting and neutralizing submarines in harsh Arctic conditions.
Participants and Forces Involved
The maneuvers involve submarines, surface ships, helicopters, and anti-submarine aircraft. The composition of forces includes:
- From Norway: a frigate and a submarine
- From the United Kingdom: a submarine and a P8 Poseidon patrol anti-submarine aircraft
- From the Netherlands: a submarine
- From Germany: a submarine and two auxiliary vessels
- From Denmark: helicopters
Also participating in the exercises are ships from the NATO Standing Maritime Group One (SNMG1).
Significance of the Exercises
According to the commander of the Royal Norwegian Navy, Admiral Kirre Haugen, the exercises are of great importance not only for the national navy but for NATO as a whole. The maneuvers demonstrate the alliance's commitment to maintaining an active presence in northern latitudes and provide a valuable opportunity for joint training with key allies.
