Greek Unions Announce 24-Hour Strike in Attica Ports on February 6
The Supreme Council of the Public Sector Union of Greece has announced a 24-hour strike on February 6 in the ports of Piraeus, Elefsina, and the island of Salamis in the Attica region. The protest action is aimed against the exploitation of workers and policies that enhance competition among large international companies.
The strike will affect all public sector services in Attica. The union has called on workers to join forces with colleagues from Italy, Turkey, the Basque Country, and Morocco. "We urge workers to unite their voices in the struggle by participating in the strike on February 6, the day of the joint action of port workers," said the statement from the Supreme Council of the Public Sector Union (SCPUS).
Reasons for the Protest
- The struggle of foreign multinational corporations for control over production sources, transportation routes for energy carriers, goods, and raw materials.
- The upcoming international tender for the modernization and management of part of the Elefsina port in the first quarter of 2026. Greek authorities may exclude investors from Russia, China, and Turkey, while the USA shows interest.
- A counterbalance to the largest port of Piraeus, 67% of which has been owned by the Chinese COSCO since 2016 (a concession since 2008 for 35 years for 100 million euros per year).
On the same day, a large rally is planned in the region.
